Humility

The Holy Spirit is said to be given to the children of God for the purpose of comforming them into the holy likeness of Jesus Christ and preparing them to live eternally in His presence. (2 Cor. 3:18, Heb. 12:14, Rom. 8:29, Phil. 3:20-21) If then, this the goal of the Spirit in His work of sanctification, then how does He plan on bringing it about? According to John 17:17, Jesus informs us that the tool of transformation will be the word of God. So what does the knowledge of the word of God beget? Now I pray all would agree that Jesus is the most holy person in all of heaven, for it is He whose holy presence we are being prepared for. Yet also, Jesus is the most humble man in all of heaven, He demonstrating His infinite humility in descending to earth as a man and in His undeserved death in the place of hell-deserving sinners (Rom. 6:23, 2 Cor.5:21). So then, it would seem then that the more we are made to look like Jesus in holiness, the more humble we become. If we deserve nothing but death, then God revealing to us our helpless state and a substitute sent on our behalf is mega-grace. Not only does He not kill us, but sends His Son to take our punishment and provides for us the path to eternal life and eternal pleasure in His presence. (John 14:6, Ps. 16:11) How much more humbling can any truth be? Furthermore, every additional truth that is revealed to us about God by the Spirit through the word of truth, should, if rightly handled, break and humble our self-centered hearts and prideful wills more and more. It would seem then that those who have a greater knowledge of God should be the most humble. Yet, why is this not so? Could it be that we have a distorted view of godliness, due to our natural inclination to boasting in ourselves? My prayer then is that we would pray that God would reveal to us in increasing degree the knowledge of His glory, yet with the understanding that it is for the purpose of fighting sin and pride, and begetting the attitude of humility evidenced in Christ.
**Phil. 2:5-8 - "Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross."
Do we really want to be like Jesus? Then may the reality of holy humility free us to boast only in the Lord and not in ourselves.
**Matt. 11:28 - "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light." (Matt. 11:28-30)
